I think expanding the xp chart for leveling is a good idea. That being said, there is a lot more to the equation than just pure xp.
One of the first consideration is the sorceress. Her allowance of super-buffers actually tweaks the favor majorly to power-levelers. Even by raising the cost of the buffer slightly, I doubt this would solve anything because money isn't that rare. Add in to the inclusion of generous players, and its a buffer party. Much easier to kill higher end monsters by lower end characters.
A good balancing issue to offset the level for xp argument is to have skill play a bigger fact in the result of using an ability. This would encourage leveling up both skill and character level and would reward more rounded characters opposed to high-level, low-skill ones.
